Laparoscopic surgery, also known as minimally invasive surgery, is a common procedure for treating appendicitis. It involves making small incisions in the abdomen through which a camera (laparoscope) and specialized surgical instruments are inserted to remove the inflamed appendix. This technique offers several advantages over traditional open surgery, including faster recovery, less pain, and minimal scarring.
The surgeon inflates the abdomen with carbon dioxide gas during the procedure to create space for better visibility. The laparoscope transmits real-time images to a monitor, allowing the surgeon to precisely navigate and remove the appendix. Once the appendix is detached, the incisions are closed with sutures or surgical glue.
Laparoscopic appendectomy is generally recommended for most patients, including children, elderly individuals, and those with uncomplicated appendicitis. However, in cases of a ruptured appendix with widespread infection, an open surgery may be required.
